Hi,

Thank you for writing Bitrate Viewer and for making it available. Now, if I can figure out how to run it...

I'm not ripping DVDs and I'm not authoring DVDs.
What I'm trying to do is simply get the average bit rate of commercial DVD movies.

For example, The DVD of the film American Gangster (UPC 025193228024) has these files:

g:\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.BUP
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_0.BUP
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_02_0.BUP
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_0.BUP
g:\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.IFO
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_0.IFO
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_02_0.IFO
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_0.IFO
g:\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_0.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_2.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_3.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_4.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_5.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_6.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_7.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_8.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_02_1.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_1.VOB

If I Load VIDEO_TS.VOB, I get a display that is obviously not right.
Total Time: 00:00:01:835
Average Bitrate: 10804 kbps
Peak: 21558 kbps

If I Load any other .VOB file, I get an error: "Couldn't open file."

This DVD has two versions of the film. Title 1 is an extended version of the film, and Title 2 is the theatrical release.

Perhaps Bitrate Viewer cannot handle DVDs with two titles? Okay, let's try a different DVD...

The DVD of the film The Last Emporer (UPC 715515034425) has these files:

g:\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.BUP
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_0.BUP
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_02_0.BUP
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_0.BUP
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_04_0.BUP
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_05_0.BUP
g:\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.IFO
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_0.IFO
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_02_0.IFO
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_0.IFO
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_04_0.IFO
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_05_0.IFO
g:\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_0.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_02_0.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_02_1.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_0.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_1.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_2.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_3.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_4.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_5.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_6.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_7.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_8.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_04_0.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_04_1.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_05_0.VOB
g:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_05_1.VOB

If I Load VIDEO_TS.VOB, I get a display that is obviously not right.
Total Time: 00:00:00:467
Average Bitrate: 1884 kbps
Peak: 2296 kbps

If I Load any other .VOB file, I get errors: "Couldn't open file" or "Couldn't find stream information" or "Codec not found"

Can you help me?

Thanks -- Mark Filipak

Mark,

of course this should be correct. Consider that each VIDEO_TS.VOB contains the main menu stuff and DVD redirectors for the programs on it you usually won't have real or long movies. It is video still or short movies between a second and 255 seconds. Everything that is shorter than 4 seconds can't be evaluated in a senseful manner with any bitrate viewer because it is simply too short.

With the rest of your .VOB files you obviously run into a CSS problem or similar ... let's say easier: file encryption problem. All these .VOB's are the real movie files which are regularly encrypted on commercial DVD's. They cannot be read by any "normal" computer program unless it circumvents the encryption code - what officially is not allowed (depends on your location and copyright law).

Regards,
Konran

Konran,
I hope it's okay to post this here. The info may help others...
Below are readings of the region 1, Criterion Collection transfer of The Last Emperor, UPC 715515034425, using various tools. The statistics are followed by questions.

PowerDVD
Mbps: (average bitrate not shown)
Time: 2:42:57
Summary: Shows time of current title immediately.
Prerequisite: none.

Erwin's Bitrate Viewer 1.4
Mbps: 6.14
Time: 2:42:50
Summary: Shows ABRs & times of all titles (selectable) promptly.
Prerequisite: none.

Konran's Bitrate Viewer 2.1
Mbps: 6.519 (proportional, calculated based on number of frames) or 5.215 (adjusted for 2:3 pulldown) ?
Time: 2:28:00 or 3:05:00 (adjusted for 2:3 pulldown) ?
Summary: Shows ABR & time of selected .VOB file slowly (progress bar).
Prerequisite: none.

Gspot 2.70a
Mbps: 6.720 (proportional, calculated based on number of frames) or 5.376 (adjusted for 2:3 pulldown) ?
Time: 2:23:34 or 2:59:27.5 (adjusted for 2:3 pulldown) ?
Summary: Shows ABR, time, SAR, PAR & DAR of selected .VOB file (or batch) slowly (numerical progress).
Prerequisite: Any application that unlocks the DVD.

MediaInfo 0.7.19
Mbps: 5.791 (proportional, calculated based on number of seconds) or 4.633 (adjusted for 2:3 pulldown) ?
Time: 2:43:01
Summary: Shows ABR & time (basic, sheet, list,...) of selected .VOB file (or all in folder) promptly.
Prerequisite: none.

Streamclip 1.2
Mbps: 6.44 // incomplete
Time: 2:43:06
Summary: Shows ABR & time of selected .VOB file or DVD promptly; malfunctions.
Prerequisite: Quicktime Alternative 1.81.

1 - I would think that running time would be straight forward, not requiring any interpretation. Do you know why they are different? - Note: I do know how to interpret 2:3 pulldown, but I'm unsure when to apply it.

2 - Why do some tools give nearly immediate results while others obviously scan the video before displaying results? Does it make a difference?

3 - It appears that the tools that work only with files (authoring tools?) require pulldown adjustment while the tools that work with titles do not, but I'm unsure. What do you think?

Thanks!

No, running time is not straight forward. MPEG specs allow different methods to save information on runtime length.

a) with elementary streams you only have GOP timecode which says how long a GOP is. this information is not necessarily supplied by a stream and if so it is unsafe to use because it maybe set mistaken.
b) with program streams you have PTS run length that should be consequently correct ... but if you're using a bad MPEG cutter and cut-edit a file that can be reassembled and written to disk with one or more missing timecode parts in between. so if you calculate the difference between end timecode and start timecode you will have an error at end.
c) with VOB files you normally have PTS at least because MPEG program streams are remuxed to VOB format. aditional you have NAV packs that can precisely estimate runlength. beside the specs it is possible that VOB files can be muxed that are not conform to the specs and therefore will lead to bad timecodes.

There are many MPEG files and formats which are not written conform to the MPEG specs. besides the fact that many DVD players (set top or software) are capable of playback those files they need not necessarily contain correct timecodes. The safest way to display the runlength is to read a file in full and summarize the runtime of each frame. Variable framerates will cause problems even there.

These tools can only give immediate results on files that contain PTS marks and/or NAV packs (see above). If a file has neither the tool must fail. Bitrate Viewer attempts to estimate a file before reading it in full and displays a status of finding PTS, NAV, or GOP timecode only. Pls see the Bitrate Viewer website for these details.

I don't clearly understand what you mean here!? You always need pulldown adjustment for NTSC files that have the pulldown flags set in the MPEG video stream, i.e. when 23.976fps or 24fps is physically saved as MPEG frame contents and playback is done in film mode 29.97fps or 30fps. So by repeating specific frames of each GOP you get the increased framerate.
